The Welder is a large opponent, masked by a welding helmet and blacksmith's robe. The Welder has stumpy legs, pasty-white skin, and muscles. They will fire a long burst of yellow-orange fire projectiles at the player, from any range as long as the Welder can see them. Welders are quite tough compared to most common enemies, surviving at least four shots from the Shotgun. Upon death, Welders will explode shortly afterward, unless gibbed, wherein they will explode instantly. This explosion can harm players, but can be used to damage enemies as well.

They are first seen at E1M7, outside of the gate, as a dead body, which is non-interactive. They are first encountered as enemies at the beginning of Episode 2, The Facilities, firing at players from afar from at elevated positions. Later in the level, and further into the episode, they are regularly encountered alongside Soldiers and other enemies.

Welders have surprisingly silent footsteps for their bulkiness. Their fighting pattern usually consists of moving methodically while stopping to fire a quick burst of projectiles. Welders should be targets of a high priority, as they can deal loads of damage, as well as potentially killing other enemies when they die.

The Welder is an enemy encountered in The Facilities. They make their first appearance in E2M1: The Grainery and can be found throughout the game onwards.

Appearance

Welders appear to be large men wearing welder's masks, long work gloves, leather aprons stained in blood, grey chest armor, and a similar armor for their legs and feet. Each welder brandishes a weapon resembling the Riveter, but functioning like a flamethrower.

Tactical Analysis

When a player is spotted, Welders will ignite their flamethrowers and begin to move towards the player. Welders' footsteps have a distinct noise that can be used to detect hidden ones. Their primary attack consists of rapidly firing a barrage of fireballs from their flamethrower. These projectiles are colored slightly differently from Cultist fireballs and travel at a faster rate. Welders can be especially dangerous in closed areas where there is not much room to dodge. Upon death, Welders will burst into flames for a brief moment, then explode.

Since Welders do not have a very high health pool, continuous Assault Rifle fire or a single Hunting Rifle shot is enough to bring one down. Additionally, the Sword can be used to deflect most stray projectiles back at the Welder. The Welder's explode-on-death trait can be useful for clearing out smaller enemies that patrol with it, such as Possessed Soldiers, or other Welders.
